Witness the season of pristine white wild apple blossoms (táo mèo) blanketing Mù Cang Chải and Trạm Tấu in Yên Bái! Don't miss these essential tips for trekking Tà Chì Nhù and capturing incredible photos of the iconic terraced rice fields!
Yen Bai – The warm spring awakens countless flowers to show off their vibrant colors. Amidst this brilliant natural tapestry, the pristine and gentle beauty of the Son Tra (hawthorn) blossoms stands out in the highland districts of Mu Cang Chai and Tram Tau within the province.

Leveraging the advantages of the Son Tra flower season, the people of Mu Cang Chai have developed a beekeeping model for honey production.
From late February to early April, the ancient forests on the Ta Chi Nhu mountain range in Tram Tau district suddenly burst into life with the pristine white hues of hawthorn blossoms. These delicate clusters of flowers grow interspersed among lush green foliage, swaying gently in the breeze like snowflakes against the sky. This pure white blends harmoniously with the verdant mountains, creating an incredibly poetic natural landscape. The subtle fragrance of the hawthorn flowers gently permeates the air, carrying the essence of the Northwest mountains, captivating anyone who sets foot here.
To fully admire the beauty of the hawthorn blossoms, visitors can trek along Yen Bai's most beautiful mountain passes, such as Khau Pha Pass, or conquer the 'roof of Yen Bai' – Ta Chi Nhu. On the journey through these winding, challenging routes, travelers will witness endless hawthorn forests stretching out like white silk ribbons embracing the mountains. Beyond the natural beauty, visitors also have the opportunity to experience the unique culture of ethnic minorities, savor highland cuisine, and taste hawthorn wine – a renowned specialty drink of Yen Bai.
The hawthorn blossom season not only offers captivating scenery but also symbolizes the resilient vitality of the highland people. Amidst rugged roads and remote villages, hawthorn flowers are like a breath of fresh air, bringing faith and hope to the local residents. The hawthorn blooming season lasts only about two months. Therefore, to avoid missing the chance to admire the beauty of these flowers, many people make plans to travel and sightsee right after the Lunar New Year.
Ms. Phan Ha Anh, a tourist from Hanoi, shared: 'I was truly impressed when I first came to Yen Bai and saw the beauty of the hawthorn blossoms. Unlike the vibrant peach or plum blossoms, hawthorn flowers possess an elegant and gentle beauty, much like the kind-hearted Hmong maidens. Their small, delicate petals gently sway in the wind, releasing a subtle, refined fragrance that creates a refreshing and pleasant sensation. I hope to have the opportunity to return to Yen Bai to explore the unique cultural aspects of the Northwest region, experience the peace and tranquility of the mountains, and admire the beauty of the hawthorn flowers once more.'
Currently, one of the places dubbed the 'paradise' of hawthorn blossoms is Mu Cang Chai district. It boasts incredibly beautiful terraced rice fields, interspersed with vibrant hawthorn trees, creating a picturesque landscape. Here, visitors can freely admire the views, take souvenir photos, and immerse themselves in the fresh, cool atmosphere.
Additionally, visitors can explore the Hmong villages in communes such as Nam Co, Nam Khat, Pung Luong, Lao Chai, Che Cu Nha, and La Pan Tan – home to ancient, shade-giving hawthorn orchards. The hawthorn blossom season has been instrumental in attracting tourists, fostering the development of highland tourism, and improving the livelihoods of local residents.
Previously, Son Tra was a wild-growing tree, but now local people have focused on investing in its development, expanding its cultivation area. It has become a key crop for economic development, while also contributing to greening barren land and hills, preventing soil erosion, creating a sustainable ecological environment, and protecting existing forest areas. The entire province currently has about 10,000 hectares of Son Tra trees, primarily concentrated in the two districts of Tram Tau and Mu Cang Chai. On average, residents in these two highland districts harvest between 3,000 and 4,000 tons of fruit annually, generating tens of billions of Vietnamese dong in income.
Mr. Sung A Sao from Lao Chai commune, Mu Cang Chai district, shared: 'My family owns 9 hectares of Son Tra trees, which bring in an average of 150 to 200 million VND annually from fruit sales. Thanks to the income from this crop, my family has been able to provide for our children's education, build a spacious home, and purchase many useful items for the family.'
Given the practical benefits that Son Tra trees provide, it is hoped that local authorities, residents, and tourists will always be conscious of protecting and promoting the value of Son Tra, while limiting over-tourism. This should also be linked to cultural preservation, natural landscape protection, and economic development, contributing to improving the lives of the local people.
